Questions, answered plainly
Little things people forget
Ten short answers to the questions that show up at 11 pm in the middle of a move.
Step 01
Planning and packing
How far ahead should I start packing?
About four weeks ahead for a family home, two for a small flat. Start with the things you use least.
How many boxes will I need?
As a rough guide, 8 to 10 boxes per room, with extra for the kitchen. Buy a few more than you think, because returns are easy.
Can clothes go in boxes?
Fold drawers' contents into boxes, and keep hanging clothes on their hangers in a wardrobe box or sturdy bags.
Do I need to defrost the freezer?
Yes. Empty it 24 to 48 hours before moving, defrost, dry it and leave the door ajar. Let it stand upright for a few hours before switching on.
Step 02
On the day
How do I protect floors and doorframes?
Lay floor runners along the route, fit corner guards and prop doors open so nobody has to squeeze past them.
Is it worth hiring help just for the heavy items?
Often, yes. A pair of movers and a van for the sofa, wardrobes and appliances can save your back and your weekend.
Should I photograph the meters?
Yes, at both the old and the new address, on the day you move, so your bills start and finish at the right readings.
Step 03
After the move
What goes in the first-night bag?
Bedding, toiletries, phone chargers, a kettle and mugs, snacks, a torch and a basic tool set, all carried with you.
Who do I need to tell about my new address?
Your bank, employer, doctor, insurers, utility suppliers and vehicle licensing body. Consider a mail redirection service for the first months.
What if I feel overwhelmed?
Pick one room and one job. Finish it, tick it off, and take the next one tomorrow.
